Arthur is an artist. Max wants to be an artist. Arthur offers to help him, but Max is over exuberant and his painting changes Arthur more than he (or we) can imagine.

David Wiesner’s story is light hearted and subtly, and not so subtly, illustrates various types of art, and as usual his illustrations are second to none. I love the comparison of these characters differences. Arthur is very serious and reserved and Max is excited and having fun.  The series of changes Arthur endures in this book show us just why we need art in our lives, and it reminds us not to take ourselves so seriously.
